Bamboo Bridge at Koh Paen Island, Mekong River, Cambodia

In 2010 I moved to Cambodia as a volunteer at an education NGO. I started my volunteer adventure in Kampong Cham about 125 KM North East of Phnom Pen on the Mekong river. The Bamboo Bridge caught my eye, it connects the mainland to a small island in the Mekong Koh Paen.

In the dry season the river recedes and becomes too shallow for ferries but not passable by car or motorcycle. For decades the island residents built an 800-meter-long bamboo bridge that washes away in the rainy season. In 2017 a permanent concrete bridge was built about two kilometers downstream and the bamboo bridge is just a memory.
